Repairing a leaky metal rain gutter can be easy. Rust and corrosion can cause large holes to appear during the dry season. Here is a step by step guide on how to repair a metal rain gutter yourself.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Locate the leak. Clean your gutters of any leaves and debris. Pour water down your gutter and mark the area where the leak is.

  2. Step 2

If the leak is due to rust or corrosion, scrub the area with a coarse wire brush to remove any weak, rusted, or corroded metal.

  3. Step 3

Coat the entire area around the leak with a thick layer of roofing cement. Use a plastic putty knife to apply the roofing cement evenly. Make sure to cover the entire area, more is always better than less.

  4. Step 4

Bend and cut a large piece of aluminum flashing to cover your hole. Press it down firmly over the roofing cement. The roofing cement should come out of every edge of the flashing.

  5. Step 5

Smooth the excess roofing cement out flat with your putty knife to prevent future cracking.
