Things You'll Need:
- Wire brush
- Ladder
- Roofing cement
- Putty knife
- Aluminum flashing
- Tin snips
-
Step 1
Locate the leak. Clean your gutters of any leaves and debris. Pour water down your gutter and mark the area where the leak is.
-
Step 2
If the leak is due to rust or corrosion, scrub the area with a coarse wire brush to remove any weak, rusted, or corroded metal.
-
Step 3
Coat the entire area around the leak with a thick layer of roofing cement. Use a plastic putty knife to apply the roofing cement evenly. Make sure to cover the entire area, more is always better than less.
-
Step 4
Bend and cut a large piece of aluminum flashing to cover your hole. Press it down firmly over the roofing cement. The roofing cement should come out of every edge of the flashing.
-
Step 5
Smooth the excess roofing cement out flat with your putty knife to prevent future cracking.
