Does your dog bark constantly? Barking is how dogs talk. But excessive barking can keep you up at night and irritate the neighbors. Here are a few tips on how to get your dog to stop barking.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Squirt gun Privacy screen
  1. Step 1

    Understand the reasons dogs bark.
The tendency to bark is more pronounced in some breeds than others. Guard dogs, small dogs, and hunting dogs are know for their constant barking. Petting and comforting dogs when they bark can also be seen by your dog as a form of reward for barking. And then there is the natural instinct to guard which you are constantly reminded of whenever the doorbell rings or a stranger passes by.

  2. Step 2

Put your dog in a crate and cover it will a blanket. This will punish them by removing them from contact with the outside world. 10 to 15 minutes is all that is usually needed.

  3. Step 3

If your dog is barking every time they see someone walk by, put up a privacy screen on your fence. This will block visual contact with people walking by.

  4. Step 4

Interrupt your dogs barking with a stream of water from a squirt gun . This is a harmless, but effective disciplinary technique widely used to prevent excessive barking in dogs of all breeds.
