How to Participate in Focus Groups

Participating in a focus group is a beneficial experience for the participant and for the company running the group. Companies hire an outside firm to select and schedule focus group members to give their honest opinions about new products and services. The companies go to great expense and effort to get the public's opinions, so how you participate in the focus group is important.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen to the scheduler. Usually when you are selected to participate in a focus group, a scheduler will call to confirm you will be able to attend the focus group at the scheduled time. Write down the date and time and any other information you are given.

    • 2

Do your homework ahead of time. Some focus groups require you to complete a small assignment before you arrive for the group, such as buying a small item, such as a greeting card or candy bar, or completing a questionnaire.

    • 3

Show up for the focus group early. If you are told to arrive 15 minutes early, arrive at least 15 minutes early. Often the scheduling company will overbook and schedule extra participants to ensure they have enough people for the focus group. Often bonuses are given but only those who arrive early can participate.

    • 4

Use the restroom before the focus group begins. It is not usually an option to be able to leave to use the restroom unless the focus group lasts an hour or longer.

    • 5

Listen until you are asked to speak. A moderator will begin the focus group. Let the moderator speak and when asked, provide the information asked for. Do not ramble on and on. When asked to introduce yourself, keep it short and sweet. Usually saying your first name, occupation and a brief amount of personal information is sufficient.

    • 6

Answer the questions asked. The moderator and the company representatives watching the focus group behind the two-way glass are not interested in all aspects of your life. Keep answers brief and to the point. Answer what is asked, then be quiet.

    • 7

Thank the moderator for their time. Collect your check or cash and be on your way.
