I think Microsoft finally got it right with Windows 7. Not to say that I didn't eventually accept previous Windows Operating systems, it's just that Windows 7 actually seems to be decent right out of the gate.

I have, however, run into a hiccup when try to update several Toshiba notebooks from Vista to Windows 7. During the compatibility check, it reports that the upgrade can't continue until "Toshiba HDD Protection" is removed. For those who aren't familiar with the software, it's used to alert you when your hard drive senses vibrations or tilting. Just don't run around with your laptop (unless it's solid state) while it's on, and you'll be ok.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toshiba Notebook running Windows Vista
  • Windows 7 upgrade software
  1. Step 1

In Vista, navigate to System Properties. You can do so by right clicking Computer and choosing properties, or through Control Panel by choosing System.

  2. Step 2

Once in System Properties, choose Device Manager. You'll have to be a local administrator to obtain access.

  3. Step 3

In Device Manager, expand the System Devices menu, and locate "Toshiba HDD Protection". Select it, and choose to uninstall it.

  4. Step 4

Once successfully uninstalled, open explorer, navigate to Windows\System32\drivers and delete "thpdrv.sys".

  5. Step 5

That's it! Restart your PC for good measure. Depending on your configurations, Windows may alert you that you have a new device (it's just rediscovering the driver you just uninstalled). Ignore this message, and continue on to upgrade to Windows 7!
