Although handwashing is a major factor in preventing the flu and other viral and bacterial infections, there are other precautions families can take at home to keep the bacteria, etc. that are carried home from school, work, and the community to a minimum and kill some of those germs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Disinfectant wipes
  • Antibacterial dish soap
  • Antibacterial hand soap
  1. Step 1

Have children and adults wash their hands thoroughly when first arriving home.

  2. Step 2

Use antibacterial wipes to wipe down the telephone several times during the day and evening as well as the hand set, cell phones, and television remotes.

  3. Step 3

Make sure you explain the importance of not allowing other family members to drink out of the same glass. Consider labeling a glass or cup or two with each family member's name.

  4. Step 4

Encourage schools to use an antibacterial wipe or spray on the water fountains and sinks throughout your child's school.

  5. Step 5

Wipe down the handle of disposable water containers and fountains in the workplace for getting a drink or filling a cup with water.

  6. Step 6

Watch your toddler or other younger children, primarily between the ages of 3-6, after they complete toileting to make sure they wash their hands with soap as younger children have a tendency to be more impatient.

  7. Step 7

Consider purchasing antibacterial hand cleaners for the home that do not require the use of water for using or rinsing.

  8. Step 8

Make sure you wipe down the refrigerator and microwave handles, the oven handle, and other appliance handles and faucets with an antibacterial soloution or wipe several times during the evening.

  9. Step 9

Wipe down the dinner table both before and after each meal.
