It doesn't take more than a few wise and consistent choices to bring about a longer, more healthier life. It's about the choices you have made, are making now and will make every day. It's never too late to start to make the right choices for a longer life. Many of us already know the truth of the steps outlined in this article, but seeing it in one place reinforces for us that our life is mainly in our own hands with the choices we make.

  1. Step 1

    EAT BREAKFAST EVERYDAY:
    Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it is also the meal people like to skip the most. Breakfast provides your start and foundation daily. It also provides you with the proper fuel to get your day off on the right foot. Don't miss having a full healthy breakfast everyday.

  2. Step 2

    EAT A HEALTHY DIET:
    Throughout your entire day, you should strive to eat the best most healthy foods available to you. Your best options are fresh fruits and vegetables. It is also important to have some good fats and some dairy. Don't forget some protein as well. Eating a daily healthy diet will help you live a longer life.

  3. Step 3

    EXERCISE DAILY:
    Your general well-being and health depends on your activity level as well. Get up and moving at least 3 times a week and for a targeted 30 minutes per session. Walk, jog, lift weights, ride a bike ... just get up and get going and stay active. Start a healthy habit of exercise.

  4. Step 4

    MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT:
    Combining steps one through three above should help you maintain a healthy weight. Those who keep their weight within a healthy level live longer on average than those who are underweight or overweight. Stay consistent with your healthy eating habits and your exercise routine.

  5. Step 5

    GET 6-8 HOURS OF SLEEP A NIGHT:
    It's important to give your body its proper rest and downtime. Studies have shown that the average adult needs between six and eight hours of sleep per night.

  6. Step 6

    LEARN HOW TO HANDLE STRESS:
    Stress is one of the leading causes of disease. Learn now how to handle the stress of everyday life. Find a hobby. Give yourself breaks. Take a vacation. Learn to stop and breathe.

  7. Step 7

    ELIMINATE BAD HABITS:
    Learn to live longer by eliminating those bad habits that you know are detrimental to your health. Smoking is probably number one on the list. Too much alcohol is another contributor to a shortened life expectancy. Replace those bad habits with good alternatives ... including those mentioned in the steps above.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consistency is the key. Stick with your healthy choices. Make them habits of health.
  • Outside influences also affect our length of life, including the decisions of those around us. Rest assured, however that you are doing all you can within the range of that which you can control.

on 11/9/2009 Yes. Breakfast is so important! When I was student teaching, I saw kids who could not focus because they had skipped or could not afford breakfast. My cooperating teacher brought in snacks for them. Great article! Keep up the good work.
