Things You'll Need:
- Computer access
- Food label (from the back of your dog or cat food)
-
Step 1
Identify if you are feeding your pet one of the brands already identified by the FDA as containing pentobarbital. These include select lines by Ol' Roy, Heinz Kibbles and Bits, and Pro Plan. See resources for a full list of already identified brands.
-
Step 2
Locate the ingredients label on your favorite pet or dog food.
-
Step 3
Identify if any of the following rendered animal ingredients are in your dog food: Meat and Bone Meal (MBM), Beef and Bone Meal (BBM), Animal Fat (AF), and Animal Digest (AD). According to the FDA, these are the ingredients most likely to include pentobarbitol in them from euthanized animals.
-
Step 4
Search the ingredient list for beef tallow (BT). The FDA states that if this is listed 1st, 2nd or 3rd on the ingredients list, the pet food has a 60% chance of containing unacceptable levels of pentobarbital.
-
Step 5
Purchase natural or organic dog food that does not contain animal by products.
