How to Remove T8 Style Lights

T8 light tubes are effectively replacing T12 light tubes because of their compact size and storage readiness. Because they are smaller tubes, they use less space so they are easier to store and replace than their larger counterparts, and their small size does not translate to less light or lower light quality. All current T12 fixtures can easily be converted to a T8 fixture by switching the T12 ballast for a T8 ballast. Removing and replacing T8 light bulbs is a snap. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the light off and shut the power off at the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Remove the plastic lens cover by unclipping it from one side of the light fixture, followed by the other side. Set the lens cover aside.

    • 3

Twist the T8 tube light 1/4-turn either direction. Slide the T8 tube light out of the ballast contact points straight down.

    • 4

Lay the used T8 light tubes aside while replacement tubes are installed.

    • 5

Take the used T8 light tubes to a recycling center (like The Home Depot) so the mercury in the fluorescent tubes can be recycled.
