How to Keep Deer Away From Flowers & Shrubs

Deer are adorable from a distance but a pain close up when they wander into your garden and devour flowers and shrubs. A single deer can eat up to 4 1/2 kilograms of vegetation a day. Don't let your garden provide the bulk of a deer's diet. This article will cover a few methods for deer prevention that won't hurt the deer or any other animals in the neighborhood.       Mix an egg with about a quart of water and apply to leaves of plants. If you are worried about a high shrub, apply the egg mixture at about 28 to 32 inches off the ground.

      Sprinkle water over plant and shrub leaves and shake a little ground cayenne or jalapeno pepper onto the plant, avoiding the flowers. You can also leave a few cloves of crushed garlic near the plants.

      If you find the egg mixture to be effective, reapply every five days or after a heavy rain.

      If homemade remedies aren't effective, spray plants with a store-bought mixture such as Deer Away or Deer Off, which may be stronger. These sprays can be reapplied every three to four weeks or after rain.

  • Your loud, yappy dog might be able to help you. Deer are skittish around loud noises. If you don't mind the commitment, a fence is guaranteed to keep deer out. It will have to be at least eight feet tall, however, to be effective. Deer dislike a lot of plants. You may want to consider planting bad-tasting plants such as marigolds, morning glories, mint or St. John's Wort.

  • Predator urine, meant to frighten away deer that smell it, is available in some gardening stores. There is some controversy as to whether the method for getting the urine is humane. Predator urine also needs to be reapplied frequently. Do not use mothballs. They are toxic to other animals, and you may end up injuring or killing someone's pet.
