1
Check your pet's collar. It may be a simple case of dead batteries, an ill-fitting collar or too much dog fur between the pet's skin and the shock plate.
-
2
Locate the radio transmitter box. Are there any flashing lights or beeping sounds? These often indicate fence problems, such as an underground wire break. Remove the fence wires from the transmitter jack and replace them with the ends of a short piece of wire. If the error indicators go away, you probably have a break in the underground wiring.

3
Buy an RF choke, a small inexpensive electrical part that will allow your radio transmitter to emit its radio frequency, even though the circuit is broken. Wrap the fence wires around the ends of the RF choke leads that are closer to the coils. Then insert the RF choke leads into the transmitter jacks.
-
4
Tune a portable radio to the frequency your invisible fence is emitting. The actual frequency can vary from brand to brand, so check the instructions that came with the system. You can also search for the radio frequency with your portable radio. When you hear a fast tapping or beeping noise through the portable radio, you have the right frequency.
-
5
Walk along the invisible fence perimeter with the portable radio, listening to the radio frequency. When you hear a drop in the signal, that indicates a break in the wiring. Walk the entire length of the invisible fence, so you don't miss any wire breaks. Mark the wire breaks, so you can come back to them.
-
6
Carefully dig up the invisible fence wiring. Go slow because you do not want to nick or break the wiring any further. Using a piece of wire that is similar to the one your invisible fence uses, connect the exposed wire ends. Go back to the radio transmitter and remove the RF choke. Reconnect the fence wires to the transmitter jacks. If the transmitter error indicator goes away, you've found your only fence break. If it keeps going, you have more fence breaks and need to go back out and find them.
-
7
Go back to the mended wire breaks and make sure they are secure. Cover them with waterproof wire connectors to protect the invisible fence from future problems. Carefully bury the mended wire piece.
