  1. How to Take Care of a Bonsai Tree

    • 1

Water your bonsai often to keep a feeling of dampness in the soil. The Bonsai tree soil has to be moist but not wet. Too much moisture can lead to root rot while too little will dry the roots out. Do not water on a regular schedule. Water the tree according to how the soil feels. If the soil has dried do not try to overcompensate. This will only lead to further root damage. Water gradually to give the tree the best chance of bouncing back.

Get the right balance in the soil. If your tree is deciduous then a mixture of 30 percent grit and 70 percent humus is recommended. If your bonsai is needled or of the evergreen variety then 70 percent humus and 30 percent grit in the soil is a good balance.

Feed the tree correctly. Feeding the bonsai is one of the areas where people make mistakes. Despite their delicate nature, not all bonsais need to be fed.If the bonsai has been recently transplanted, liquid fertilizers should be used for the first week. Young bonsai trees need the most fertilizer, and one that is rich in nitrogen is the best. As the tree matures, feeding can be less frequent. The nitrogen content can also be lessened and balanced with other nutrients. For older trees, a fertilizer with a ratio of 2/3 nitrogen, 1/3 potassium and 1/3 phosphorus is best.
