Easter lily bulbs are different from other flower bulbs. Though the Easter lily does not require special soil Ph levels and will grow in most any type of well drained soil, the bulbs of the Easter lily are fragile. The natural protective tunic surrounding other flower bulbs is not present on the Easter lily bulb, so the bulb will easily dry out or fall victim to extreme temperatures.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Potting soil
  • Gardening gloves
  • Small gardening shovel
  • Bone meal
  • Organic mulch
  1. Step 1

Place fresh potting soil in your flower garden, this ensures that you have well-draining and nutrient rich soil for your Easter lily bulbs. Spread out an even layer of potting soil, approximately 6-inches deep. You may have to use more than one bag of potting soil.

  2. Step 2

Dig several holes by hand or with the small gardening shovel, approximately 3-inches deep. Be sure to place each hole approximately 1-foot apart, this allows for the growth of the bulbs and a root system.

  3. Step 3

Sprinkle bone meal into each hole. Apply only a light layer of the bone meal, and then place one bulb in each hole. The bone meal acts as a fertilizing agent to promote the growth of your Easter lily bulbs.

  4. Step 4

Cover each bulb and mound the dirt on top of the bulbs, so that several small bumps are in your flower garden. Water the entire soil area. Do not over water. Apply only enough water to make the surface of the soil damp.

  5. Step 5

Cover the garden with organic mulch such as grass clipping, rotting leaves, hay, or tree mulch. This provides nutrients to the soil surrounding the bulbs. Keep the mulch off the mounts to allow for the stems of the Easter lilies to grow without struggling to push through the mulch material.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be ready to plant your bulbs as soon as you purchase them or as soon as they arrive in the mail. If you are transplanting Eastern lily bulbs from another location or garden, you will need to transplant them immediately to prevent damage to the bulbs. Plant your bulbs during the late spring, summer, or late fall. Easter lilies grow and bloom in the spring, around the Easter months. This is how the Easter lily got its name.
