Using waste materials to create craft projects is not a new concept. In fact, juice pouch purses have become a popular staple of alternative fashion. While these are not the only materials used in "upcycled" fashion, juice pouches and candy wrappers are popular choices for craft projects that would otherwise utilize fabric because they are often flexible and have interesting visual patterns. Much like any other craft, there are multiple options for creating a project and multiple ways to execute it. You should experiment and play with your materials and methods and find out what looks visually pleasing.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Juice pouches
  • Candy wrappers
  • Water
  • Clear packing tape
  • Clear vinyl fabric (optional)
  • Sewing machine (optional)
  1. Step 1

Check to ensure that the juice pouches are completely empty of contents and the candy wrappers do not contain any remnants of candy.

  2. Step 2

Rinse the pouches and wrappers under running water to remove any remaining sugar or debris.

  3. Step 3

Decide what you would like to make with your pouches and/or wrappers. A handbag will require fewer juice pouches than candy wrappers, and a curtain will require more of either material.

Pouches, wallets and other fashion accessories are popular choices for projects.

  4. Step 4

Sandwich your pouches or wrappers between two layers of clear packing tape, with the sticky sides of the tape facing inwards towards your materials. This creates a sheet of fabric from your chosen crafting items that you can then tape further to create the shape needed for your project.

A wallet, for example, would require a rectangle of material. To create a simple wallet, simply create a rectangle twice as long as you will need. Fold it in half, and tape the two shortest sides together, leaving a long opening for the top of the wallet.

  5. Step 5

Instead of using clear tape, you can also quilt your pouches or wrappers between layers of clear vinyl. Use a sewing machine to sew around each wrapper or pouch, creating a durable, textured fabric for use in crafting.

For example, to create a juice pouch curtain, you would sandwich each individual juice pouch between the vinyl fabric, securing the pouches in their own pouches of the vinyl fabric created by lines of stitching.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not hesitate to think of new uses for old materials. Some people prefer to cut the backs off of their juice pouches before use so that there is a plain side visible. This is perfectly acceptable. Experiment! Even if your project does not turn out as you would like, it can still be interesting.
