How to Make Butterfly Wings for Halloween

Create butterfly wings to make a Halloween costume. Butterflies come in all different colors and designs. Use any design you want to decorate the wings. Make the wings from thick cardboard and craft foil. The craft foil gives the wings a shiny, polished look. Wear a dark shirt, leggings, leotard or pants with the wings. Keep the wings after Halloween for dress-up games and other costumes.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a butterfly-wing shape on the cardboard. Have the person that will wear the wings lie down on the cardboard, so you can measure the size. The wings should be visible over the shoulders and the bottom should reach at least to the lower back.

    • 2

      Cut out the wings.

    • 3

Spread out the colored craft foil and lay the wings on top. Draw an outline of the wings on the foil and cut it out. Spread out another sheet of foil and trace the wings again, adding an extra two inches all around. Cut out the shape.

    • 4

Spread white glue on one side of the cardboard wings. Set the larger foil shape on top of the glue and gently flatten it with your finger. Leave the excess alone for now.

    • 5

Spread glue on the other side of the cardboard wings. Set the smaller piece of foil on the glue and smooth with your fingers.

    • 6

Spread glue on the extra foil around the edge of the wings. Fold the extra foil over, so that it covers the edge of the cardboard and glues to the inside of the wings.

    • 7

Use acrylic paint to make designs on the foil, if desired.

    • 8

Measure two strips of elastic to make loops that will fit over the arms of the person wearing the costume. Each strip should make a loop that goes around the shoulders. Use a hot-glue gun to attach the ends of the loops close to the center on the inside of the cardboard wings. Make sure to position them so that the wings sit in the right place on the wearer's back.
