How to Receive HDTV Audio Without a TV

By receiving HDTV audio without a television, you can listen to the many music programs that come with cable or satellite service packages. You'll need an HDTV signal in order to receive audio, typically a subscription to either a cable or dish service. All you need is the correct cables, a receiver capable of processing high-definition audio, plus speakers and the cable or satellite box that comes with your service package.

Things You'll Need

  • HDTV service, either cable or satellite
  • Home theater receiver with HDMI jack
  • Speakers

Instructions

    • 1

Connect one end of the HDMI (High Definition Media Interface) cable to the trapezoid-shaped jack on the back of your satellite or cable box by pressing the plug firmly into the jack. The plug only inserts one way.

    • 2

Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI jack on the back of your receiver.

    • 3

Turn the selector knob on the receiver or use the remote control to choose a high-def audio/video setting.

    • 4

Turn on the cable or satellite receiver box and manually set the box to the station you wish to hear. You will need a printed copy of the available channels for your service, which is available through your provider, or you can simply scan through the channels to find one you wish to hear.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the cable or satellite box is equipped with RCA-type audio jacks, you can connect a standard set of RCA audio cables (red goes to right channel, white goes to left) on the box and to a free set of Input jacks on the receiver. For example, if you connect the plugs to the receiver's Auxiliary jacks, you would need to set the selector knob or remote control to Aux to hear signals from the satellite or cable box. The sound quality will not be as good as an HDMI connection.
