How to Knit Burton Hats
Burton knitted caps are popular on the ski slope and snowboard course. There are many different styles of hats. This is a pattern similar to the Burton knitted ski beanie. The project is simple, but you will need to know basic knitting skills to proceed.

- Sport-weight worsted yarn
- Size 3 straight needles
- Tapestry needle
- Knitting markers

Cast on 113 stitches.

Create the first row: knit one stitch, purl one stitch and repeat until the end of the row. Last stitch is knit one. Create the second row: purl one stitch, knit one stitch and repeat until the end of the row. Last stitch is purl one. Repeat these two rows once more.

Begin pattern. For the first row: knit two stitches, purl one stitch and repeat to the end of the row. The last two stitches should be knitted. For the second row, purl all the stitches. Work this pattern until the hat measures 5 3/4 inches from the beginning. End with a purled row.

Knit the next row in pattern over 12 stitches and place marker. Knit 22 stitches in pattern and place marker--do this four times. Finish the row by knitting the last 13 stitches in pattern. Purl the next row.

For the crown, row 1: follow the pattern until you are two stitches away from the first marker. Knit two stitches together. Slip marker. Repeat until the end of the row, knitting two stitches together before each marker. Purl row 2. Repeat these two rows 10 more times until you have only 23 stitches left on the needles.

For the next row: Knit two stitches together over and over across the row. Knit the last stitch. You should have 12 stitches on your needles.

Cut a 20-inch long tail to thread through each of the remaining stitches. Pull tight. Sew the seam, and weave in the end of the yarn.
