A heat gun is an invaluable tool for do-it-yourself projects around the house, but the shaft inside of it can get damaged from being dropped and from daily wear and tear. A defective heat gun can be dangerous to use. Repairing a heat gun saves money because a replacement can be quite costly. The repair of a heat gun can be done safely if approached with caution and deliberation.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clean cloth
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Threaded brass rod
  • Brass nuts
  • Hacksaw
  • File
  • Electric drill
  1. Step 1

Put the clean cloth down on a work surface. Remove the screws on the heat gun with the Phillips screwdriver. Unscrew the heat shield that is now exposed. Pull the two sides of the heat gun apart.

  2. Step 2

Locate the broken shaft situated against the potentiometer dial and remove both the shaft and the potentiometer dial from the heat gun. Take a threaded brass rod and measure it against the plastic shaft. Use the hacksaw to cut the threaded brass rod to the same length as the plastic shaft. Toss the plastic shaft away. File down the ends of the threaded brass rod.

  3. Step 3

Drill a hole through the center of the potentiometer dial. Put the threaded brass rod through the hole of the potentiometer dial. Thread a brass nut on the end of the rod going through the potentiometer dial. Thread another brass nut from the other end of the brass rod until it goes up against the potentiometer dial.

  4. Step 4

Put the threaded brass rod and potentiometer dial back into position in the shell of the heat gun. Adjust the brass nut so the rod occupies the same length as the plastic shaft did.

  5. Step 5

Put the two sides of the heat gun back together. Attach and screw the heat shield back onto the heat gun. Screw the outer screws back into the heat gun. Plug the heat gun in for power and turn it on. Use it for your next project.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the work surface is clean and brightly lit when working on the heat gun. Use a vice to hold the brass rod down while using the hacksaw.
  • Any device that uses electricity can be a hazard. Should the heat gun appear to have an electrical failure, cease using it and dispose of it immediately.
