Gift baskets make excellent holiday presents. Fill the basket with Christmas-related items. You may also opt to create a theme basket that is personalized to the individual recipient. These baskets can be large and elaborate, or they can be created as small tokens of appreciation. Christmas gift baskets might contain edible treats such as candy and cookies. Basket for adults may include gourmet coffees and teas. Non-edible items that relate to a specific theme could include coffee mugs or baking supplies. Whatever the approach, these baskets make stunning and thoughtful holiday presents.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Medium-sized wicker basket
  • Filler material
  • Gift items
  • 6 to 10 candy canes
  • 6 to 10 holiday silk flower picks
  • 1 roll of cellophane shrink wrap
  • 10 inches of floral wire
  • 2 yards of 3-inch satin ribbon in a holiday color

    Making the basket

  1. Step 1

Assemble the items that will go in the basket. A standard holiday theme might include candies and treats, classic holiday movies, ornaments or Christmas music collections.

  2. Step 2

Layer festive filler material in the bottom of the basket. Materials that could be used include red or green shredded paper, shredded cellophane, crumbled tissue paper, raffia or straw.

  3. Step 3

Arrange the gift items in the basket. Place the larger and heavier items toward the back and work forward, placing the smaller items in the front.

  4. Step 4

Add the candy canes around the items to provide visual interest.

  5. Step 5

Insert the holiday floral picks into the filler material to flesh out any empty areas in the basket.

  6. Step 6

Lay enough cellophane shrink wrap to cover the entire basket on a flat surface. Place the basket on top of the shrink wrap in the center.

  7. Step 7

Pull the shrink wrap up over the basket. Secure it at the top by twisting the floral wire around the gathered cellophane in the same way that you would tie off a bread bag.

  8. Step 8

Use the ribbon to tie a decorative bow over the floral wire that is holding the cellophane in place.

  9. Step 9

Trim away any excess or uneven cellophane.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try preparing a theme basket that the recipient can enjoy over the holidays. Stock a movie lover's basket with packages of microwave popcorn, gift certificates to the local movie theater or copies of classic holiday films. An avid reader might enjoy a collection of Christmas related books or a festive tote bag.
  • Take the dimensions of the basket with you when purchasing items. Avoid anything that would take up too much room in the basket.
