Things You'll Need:
- Airbrush Gun
- Pearl or candy paint
- Clear coat
- Vinyl masking paper
- Stabilo pen
- Razor knife (exacto)
-
Step 1
Draw the flames you wish to put on your guitar directly onto the vinyl masking paper with a Stabilo pen, which has a very thin tip and can help you make detailed flames for your guitar finish. This vinyl masking paper comes in many sizes and is easy to draw on and cut when you are ready to apply the paint to your guitar.
-
Step 2
Choose the color you wish for the ghost flames. Use a light-color pearl or candy paint similar to the finish of your guitar for subtle ghost flames. You may also use a shade darker if you prefer.
-
Step 3
Cut the flame pattern out of the vinyl masking paper using a razor or exacto knife. Be careful to cut smoothly as you do not want your flames to look jagged.
-
Step 4
Remove the hardware from your guitar. If you are only doing the back bridge side of the guitar, you may only need to remove the bridge. The vinyl masking paper will protect the rest of the guitar from stray paint spray.
-
Step 5
Carefully remove the backing from the vinyl masking tape and apply it to the guitar with the white side covering any areas you do not want to paint. Carefully press the paper so that it adheres to the guitar. Any wrinkles in the vinyl paper will allow the new paint to seep and negatively affect the detail of the ghost flames.
-
Step 6
Paint the exposed area of the guitar with an airbrush. You will want to mix the paint often because the pearl in the paint can become unevenly distributed and make your flames look spotty and uneven. Apply paint liberally to the tops of flames and thin out the amount of paint used as you move away from the flame tops for added effect.
-
Step 7
Allow the paint to dry for 24 to 48 hours and then spray with a clear coat and allow that coat to dry for 24-48 hours as well.
