How to Oil a Floor Jack

Floor jacks differ tremendously from the emergency jack that normally comes with modern vehicles. Floor jacks use fluid to provide lift; the small emergency jacks use simple screw systems. Floor jacks generally can support much higher weights, but they require service from time to time. Oil must be added to a floor jack, very similar to the way it must be added in a car's engine. Check your owner's manual to find your jack's specific service interval.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the jack on a flat surface in its normal position. Never lay a floor jack upside down or on its side.

    • 2

Locate the oil plug or service screw. Some models have a simple plug; others have a screw you must remove. It's usually located on the cylinder. Pull out the plug or remove the screw.

    • 3

Twist the release handle to begin bleeding the system. Apply pressure to the jack's lift point, and pump up the jack handle eight to 10 times.

    • 4

Use a funnel to add hydraulic oil to the system. Add a small amount at a time, until the well is full. Replace the oil plug or service screw when you are finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only use hydraulic jack oil in your floor jack. Different lubricants could damage your floor jack.
