How to Store Window Clings

It's fun to brighten up your windows for holidays with window clings, but it can be disheartening to dig into your holiday storage boxes after a year and pull out a clump of plastic, wrinkled and sticking together with the coloring peeling off. In the months spent in storage, window clings are vulnerable to heat and humidity, and improper placement will damage their finish and their ability to stick. Storing your window clings properly will ensure you can enjoy them year after year. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Spread sheets of newspaper on a table surface. Peel your window clings carefully off the windows and lay them on the newspaper.

    • 2

Place two bowls of water on the table. Add a tablespoon of dish detergent to one and mix it to make it sudsy. Dip a sponge in the sudsy water and wipe the clings on each side to remove dust and debris that may have accumulated on them. This will also help them retain their ability to cling.

    • 3

Wipe them with a sponge dipped in clean water to remove traces of soap. Place them on a paper towel to blot them dry.

    • 4

Set aside any window clings that are trying to curl up or have creases. Hold them down and blow the edges with a hair dryer on high to warm them up. Place a piece of paper towel or newspaper over them and lay a book on top for a few hours to flatten them again.

    • 5

Take the sheets your window clings originally came on and place the clings back into their correct space. Do not lay them over any sections of the remaining peel-away plastic or they will stick and, when separated, the color can peel off.

    • 6

Place a piece of parchment paper over each sheet before stacking the next one on top of it. Cut two pieces of cardboard to the size of your window cling sheets. Sandwich the sheets between the pieces of cardboard.

    • 7

Wrap some newspaper around the entire package, tightly, and tape the newspaper in place to secure it. Label the front of the newspaper with the occasion that the window clings are used for.

    • 8

Store your window clings in a cool, dry place. Be sure the package is kept flat so that your window clings won't bend or wrinkle in storage.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you no longer have the original window cling sheets, you can use sheets of cardboard. The clings won't stick to the cardboard, so make sure they are wrapped tightly before turning them on their side.
