Instructions

    • 1

Measure the table before cutting the fabric. Begin by measuring the first layer--starting at the floor near one leg and going over the widest part of the table and then down the leg on the other side of the table. Add 1 inch. Measure the top layer by placing the tape measure across the diameter, and add 24 inches.

    • 2

Place the largest piece of fabric flat on the cutting surface. Cut the fabric into a large circle using the first measurement. Place the smaller piece of contrasting fabric on the cutting surface. Cut the fabric for the second layer into a square using the other measurement.

    • 3

Sew both pieces of fabric--all the way around the outer edge. Use a zigzag or other finishing stitch. According to the Simplicity Sewing Book, finished edges prevent raveling and improve the appearance of the finished product. Turn the edge under using a ½-inch fold. Finish the hem by sewing the hem in place with a straight stitch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Taking measurements can be time consuming, but the finished tablecloth will look best if careful pre-sewing measurements are taken.

  • Forgetting to add the extra inch to the large fabric--or the extra 24 inches to the contrasting square fabric--will result in a tablecloth that is too small.
