Instructions

  1. Basic Cleaning

    • 1

Sweep the ceiling with a broom or dust mop to remove dust and cobwebs. You can also vacuum the ceiling unless the ceiling finish is a popcorn texture. Popcorn texture can be easily detached from the ceiling if you apply too much pressure.

    • 2

Mix 1/4 cup of dishwashing liquid with one gallon of water in a bucket.

    • 3

Dampen a sponge in the cleaning solution and wipe the ceiling. (Skip this step if you have a popcorn ceiling.)

    Cleaning Mold

    • 4

Combine 1/4 cup bleach and a gallon of water in a plastic container.

    • 5

Dampen a sponge in the bleach and wash stained areas of the ceiling.

    • 6

Mix 1/4 cup laundry detergent with one gallon of water in a plastic container.

    • 7

Dampen a sponge in the cleaner and wash the stained areas to remove the bleach.

    • 8

Dampen a clean sponge with cool water and rinse the stained areas to remove the detergent. Allow the ceiling to dry completely before applying primer.

Tips & Warnings

  • While bleach will kill live mold spores, it will not remove the discoloration. You need to prime the ceiling before painting or the mold stains might bleed through the paint.

  • Wear gloves and a mask when working with bleach.
