Christmas plants may seem to be decorative all by themselves, but adding seasonal touches to their containers creates extra holiday spirit. Start by hanging small Christmas ornaments around the top of your plant pots and move on to some jolly tricks with homemade crafts.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Christmas tree ornaments
  • Glue gun
  • Candy canes
  • Terracotta pots
  • Red and gold ribbon
  • Gold paint
  • Glass or plastic gemstones
  • White glue
  • Gold sparkles
  • Red and green foil
  • Cloves, cinnamon sticks
  • Plastic container
  • White acrylic paint
  • Paper napkin with holiday design
  • Decoupage or applique glue
  • Textured snow paint

    Dress Up Your Holiday Pots

  1. Step 1

Glue candy canes to the outside of a terracotta pot with a glue gun. The candy hooks go at the top, either facing outward or side-by-side in the same direction. Tie a red ribbon around the middle of the pot and pop in a poinsettia.

Paint a terracotta pot gold. Decorate with glass or plastic gems, attaching them with the glue gun. Pipe white glue around the gems and sprinkle with glitter.

Wrap terracotta plants in red and green foil and group them with a variety of Christmas plants inside.

  2. Step 2

Cover a terracotta pot with white glue. Roll it in cloves to cover completely, inserting cloves where there are holes. Allow to dry completely. Wrap a red ribbon around the pot and tie a knot. Take three cinnamon sticks and tie the bow around them with the ribbon, then make a bow. Fill with plants for a pot filled with holiday fragrance and cheer.

Group a half dozen poinsettias of different sizes together. Tie a big gold ribbon around them all and sprinkle with gold glitter.

Wrap a large coffee can with Christmas paper and use it for a plant pot or add water and evergreen branches for another aromatic addition to your holiday décor.

  3. Step 3

Prime a plastic container (yogurt or ice cream) with white acrylic paint (two coats, if needed). Let dry. Remove the bottom layers of Christmas napkins and tear the sides to soften the straight edges. Apply decoupage glue to the container and cover it with the napkins. While the glue is still wet, highlight the decoration with glitter. Let dry. Apply textured snow paint to the top edge of the pot. Use more to add detail to the design to give a festive, wintry look. Add your favorite Christmas plant.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful not to ruin your creative work by splashing water on your decorations. Remove the plants from the pots and water them at the sink, let them drain and then return them to the containers.
  • Some plants are poisonous. Keep them away from pets and children. Glue small decorations securely so they won't be a choking hazard for small children.
