Obtain a sample of your woodwork. Ideally, you want to take a sample of wood with you when looking for paint colors to ascertain the best match. If you have an extra piece of molding left over from construction, that is perfect. If not, try to find something portable that closely matches the color of your woodwork, or temporarily detach a cabinet door or small section of molding for shopping purposes. Failing that, take pictures of your woodwork lit with various light sources so that you have something to refer to when looking for paint.

Take a trip to your favorite paint retailer with your wood samples in hand, and choose a variety of sample cards that coordinate with your woodwork and fit with the rest of your décor. Take them home and compare them in the correct light to narrow the field.

There is nothing worse than buying a gallon of paint and starting the painting process, only to discover that the color you chose looks very different on your walls than you imagined. Most paint retailers offer sample sizes that are quite inexpensive, so that you can paint a sample patch on your wall before committing to one color. If this option is available, it is an extremely helpful tool. Place the test patch close to the woodwork to ensure that the colors coordinate.
