Installing a wild bird feeder that's squirrel proof is easier than you think. You can spend a hundred dollars on shepherd's hooks or other contraptions, or you can spend $6 on a bracket and some wire. Attaching the wild bird feeder to an outdoor window frame is the key.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tube-style wild bird feeder
  • Wire
  • Wire cutters
  • 15-inch bracket with hook
  • 2 screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Ladder
  • Wild bird seed
  1. Step 1

Go to your local DIY store and buy a plant hangar bracket. 15 inches is a good length. Make sure it comes with screws for easy installation. Buy your bird seed while you're there - it's probably cheap.

  2. Step 2

Set up a ladder outside the window where you want to hang the wild bird feeder. With a pen, mark the holes for the screws on the window frame.

  3. Step 3

Tap the screw with a hammer to start the holes. Set the bracket firmly over the holes, and screw in the screws.

  4. Step 4

Measure your wire for hanging the feeder so that it will hang low enough for you to see the feeder through the window and reach it to refill easily, but high enough to be well off the ground. Cut your wire with wire cutters, and pass the ends through the top and twist to form a loop.

  5. Step 5

Fill up your feeder with wild bird seed and wait. The birds will find it in no time - and so will the squirrels. Watch the fun, as it will drive the squirrels nuts when they can't reach it from either the roof or the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to trim back shrubs and trees near your feeder. Squirrels can jump five or six feet!
