How to Relieve Intestinal Gas

Irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance and other gastrointestinal disorders can bring on intestinal gas. Signs of intestinal gas include flatulence, belching, bloating and stomach pain. And symptoms can range from mild to severe. But fortunately, there are quick and simple ways to get rid of gas and relieve discomfort.

Instructions

    • 1

Increase fiber. Eat more fiber to get rid of intestinal gas triggered by constipation. Consume between 20 and 35 g of fiber daily. Good sources include fiber supplements or capsules, fruits, whole grains and vegetables.

    • 2

Drink 64 oz. of water daily. Dehydration and lack of fluids also play a role in constipation and intestinal gas. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to increase bowel frequency and relieve intestinal gas.

    • 3

Monitor your food intake. Some foods are known to trigger gas and abdominal discomfort such as milk products, artificial sweetners, red meats, beans and certain vegetables (lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower). Reduce your intake of gassy foods or take a digestive supplement to ward off gas.

    • 4

Massage your abdomen. Gently and slowly massage your stomach to help alleviate constipation and relieve intestinal gas.

    • 5

Exercise three times a week. Establish an exercise routine to keep your digestive tract healthy and active. Activity fights constipation and relieves gas. Strive for 30 minutes of physical activity three times a week.

    • 6

Reduce air in the stomach. Swallowing air while eating, drinking or smoking increases your chances of developing intestinal gas. To stop swallowing excess air, avoid talking while eating, stay away from drinking straws and quit smoking.
