An invisible dog fence is a system of wires that are buried along your yard's perimeter. These wires give off a radio frequency that triggers the dog's collar. The dog's collar gives an electrical shock designed to deter the dog from leaving the yard. An invisible dog fence can keep your dog in your yard without having to build a traditional fence. However, it can also develop wire breaks and these are much harder to find than a hole in a traditional fence. Follow the steps below to find those wire breaks using a portable radio.

Verify that there really are wire breaks in your invisible dog fence. Your dog getting out of the yard is not reason enough. The fence error sensor will go off if it detects a fence break.

Remove the wires that connect each end of the invisible fence perimeter from the transmitter jacks and wrap the ends of the wires around the leads on an RF choke, a small device that completes radio circuits and can be bought in any electronics store.

Place the two leads of the RF choke into the transmitter jacks. Now your invisible dog fence will send out the radio frequency even though it has wire breaks.

Tune a portable radio to the radio frequency your invisible dog fence uses. The frequency may be listed in the paperwork that came with your invisible dog fence, but if it is not you can still figure it out. Turn the portable radio on and tune it the AM radio stations. Search the lower frequencies until you find the correct radio frequency. You will know you have the right one when you hear a fast tapping or beeping noise through the portable radio.

Take the portable radio along the perimeter of your yard, listening for breaks in the signal. You should walk the entire perimeter before making your determination to avoid confusing wire breaks with weak signals.
