How to Become a Certified Education Trainer

With the economic crisis and job loss becoming a day-to-day occurrence, teachers are finding themselves desperate in their job search. Finding a job with a brick-and-mortar school is like finding a needle in a haystack. But there is another option to consider.

If you have a master's degree in your chosen teaching field, you have the option of joining the technological world. All you have to do is become a certified distance education instructor. Once certified, your salary range per three course credit hours taught is between $1,000 and $2,500. The best aspect of this is that classes offered at online colleges and universities last only five and a half weeks each. Here is how you get started.

Choose a school. Becoming a certified distance education instructor requires you to attend certification courses. These courses usually take roughly five months and are available online. Two options are the University of West Georgia, located at westga.edu/~distance/trainer, and the CDEI (Certified Distance Education Instructor ) program itself, which can be found at idecc.org/content.cfm?page=CDEI. Tuition for the University of West Georgia courses is $695 per course, and for CDEI is $200 per course.

Attend orientation. This also can be accomplished online. Orientation familiarizes you with the online classroom setting and ensures that you receive proper credit for your assignments. This takes little time, and there is no set schedule to do this, so you are free to attend when it is convenient for you.

Apply to colleges and universities. When you begin your job search as a certified distance education instructor, keep in mind also that this job has other titles that mean the same as yours. Most colleges and universities refer to their online instructors as adjunct professors, online professors or adjunct teachers. These all have the same job description with varying titles, and all require the same education qualifications.

Re-certify after three years. Initial certification will only last for three years, so you will be required to obtain re-certification to teach. It is best to do so through the college or university where you were certified originally. Most offer a 10-year option, in which you have the choice of attending five course credit hours each year for 10 years. Or you may take 50 course credit hours within the first year. Costs range from $80 to $150 per five course credit hours.
