The wax ring on a toilet prevents dangerous sewer gases from entering your home by providing a seal. A ring of tacky wax about 6 inches in diameter is used to provide a seal on the bottom of the toilet between the floor and the toilet bottom. Apply a new wax ring if there is water coming from under the toilet, if you smell sewer gases or if a new toilet or flooring is installed in a bathroom.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wax ring (new)
  • Wrench or pliers
  • Putty knife
  • Towel
  1. Step 1

Turn off all water supplies to the toilet. The water supply valve is usually located on the line below the toilet tank coming out of the wall. Turn the handle clockwise to turn off the water. If you do not have a shutoff below the tank, locate the main water shutoff valve to the house, and turn off the water supply there.

  2. Step 2

Flush the toilet to remove all water currently in the tank. This will leave a minimal amount of water in the bowl. Remove the excess water by plunging with a toilet plunger if you prefer. Lift the toilet bowl carefully, and dump outside or in a container.

  3. Step 3

Remove the water supply line that is running to the tank on the toilet. Remove the line at the tank or the cutoff valve.

  4. Step 4

Remove the caps at the base of the toilet bowl and loosen the nuts on the bolts. Use pliers or an adjustable wrench to remove them.

  5. Step 5

Lift the toilet straight up, and set the bowl aside on a protected surface or towel.

  6. Step 6

Lift the bowl up to expose the bottom of the toilet and the old wax ring. Remove the old wax ring by hand, and use a putty knife to scrape the excess wax from the bottom of the toilet and around the flange on the floor.

  7. Step 7

Place the new wax ring on the floor over the flange on the mounting ring. Carefully replace the toilet back in place by lining up the bolts. Apply pressure to the toilet by gently rocking it in each direction to ensure a good seal.

  8. Step 8

Replace bolts, and tighten snuggly so there is no movement from the toilet.

  9. Step 9

Replace water supply lines to the tank, and tighten in place. This will allow the tank to refill. Flush the toilet, and check for leaks.

Tips & Warnings
  • When replacing the bolts to anchor the toilet, use a hacksaw if the bolts prevent you from replacing the caps. Otherwise, the bolts will not allow the caps to be used.
  • Older toilet bolts at the base of the toilet have a tendency to rust, in which case a hacksaw sometimes must be used and the bolts replaced. Toilets are heavy and awkward to maneuver, which means you may want an extra hand removing and resetting the toilet.
