If the glass stains on your aquarium are making it an unsightly mess, you may be tempted to reach for the Windex, but that decision could prove fatal to your fish. Chemicals in Windex and similar products can harm freshwater and saltwater fish, even through the glass. To safely clean the glass stains off of your aquarium, you will need to use a safe cleaner.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Aquarium-safe glass cleaner
  • Sponges
  • Paper towels
  • Magnetic glass cleaner
  1. Step 1

Mix your cleaning solution if you are using a homemade cleaner. A one to one mixture of vinegar and water makes a good cleaner for aquarium glass, but it is important to be careful that it does not leave streaks.

  2. Step 2

Dip a sponge in the mixture, carefully wiping the outside of the aquarium glass and immediately drying the glass with the paper towels. If you are using a commercial aquarium-safe glass cleaner, spray it on following the instructions on the bottle, then wipe the glass clean with the paper towels. It may take several passes to get the glass completely clean, especially if you have a stubborn stain.

  3. Step 3

Clean the inside of the glass after you have cleaned the outside. Algae often builds up on the inside of the aquarium glass, especially in spots where the glass faces a window. Magnetic aquarium cleaners are the perfect way to clean stains off the inside of the glass without endangering your fish. Simply place one side of the magnetic glass cleaner on the inside of the tank and the handle side on the outside. The magnet means you can guide the cleaner from the outside of the tank, helping you remove built-up algae quickly and easily.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never use commercial window cleaners in your aquarium, because they could harm your fish
