HP toner cartridges are simple plug-in units. The printer uses one black ink cartridge and one three-color cartridge. The part number for the black ink is HP 15 or C6615 series. The part number for the color ink is HP 17 or C6625 series, both available anywhere ink and toner are sold over the Internet or in a supply store. Most vendors of toner cartridges offer recycling services for used cartridges. The HP print cartridges are installed into what is called and somewhat shaped like a cradle.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn on the printer by pressing the power button. Open the top cover of the printer. You will see the cartridge cradle move to a central position where you can easily access the HP toner cartridges. The print cartridge light will be flashing.

  2. Step 2

Open the packaging for the replacement cartridge, and remove the cartridge. Pull up on the latch over the top of the empty cartridge, and lift it out of the cradle. The traces of ink on the bottom of the old unit will stain. Put the old cartridge into the empty packaging for disposal or recycling.

  3. Step 3

Remove the protective tape from the bottom of the new unit taking care not to touch any of the parts that were protected by the tape. The copper parts provide electrical connections and can result in malfunction of the printer. The print nozzles can easily become obstructed or clogged.

  4. Step 4

Place the cartridge in the cradle, positioned just like the empty unit you removed, and press down firmly. Close the latch over the top of the HP print cartridge, pushing down until you hear a click.

  5. Step 5

Return the top cover to the fully closed position. Listen for the cradle to move back to its place on the right side of the printer. The print cartridge light will go out, and you are ready to print.

Tips & Warnings

Scroll to HP Deskjet 840C Series and click. Then click the option for "Toolbox" and, lastly, the icon for the user guide.
  • Always keep ink cartridges, new or used, out of the reach of children. Damage to the printer caused by not using the type of cartridges recommended for replacement or refilling or otherwise tampering with the HP toner cartridge is not covered under the product warranty.
