How to Use a Freestyle Lite Glucometer

Maintaining healthy blood glucose levels is an important part of reducing the risk of complications associated with both juvenile and adult onset diabetes. Monitoring these levels is the first step in creating a plan to control them effectively. With the Freestyle Lite Blood Glucose Meter, you can test your blood sugar and record up to a 30-day average. You can also test on alternate test sites (besides the fingertips), which can often mean less testing discomfort.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate and remove the battery cover from the back of meter. Make sure the CR2032 coin cell battery is positioned correctly, and insert it into the battery terminal. Replace the battery cover.

    • 2

Insert the test strip into the yellow port on the bottom of the meter. The meter will turn on automatically.

    • 3

Insert a new lancet into the lancing device. Use the lancing device to extract a small blood sample. A common testing area is the hand, more specifically the fingertips, which is the recommended test site. However, the Freestyle Lite only requires a small sample size, which allows you test anywhere on your arms or legs. Nerve endings in the fingertips can result in occasional testing discomfort. Testing done on alternative areas can give your fingertips an occasional rest.

    • 4

Use the side of the strip to collect your blood sample. You will hear a beep when the meter has a large enough sample to test. If you do not hear a beep, you have 60 seconds to apply more blood without having to change your strip.

    • 5

After five seconds, you will see your blood glucose level on the screen. The ideal blood glucose varies depending on the time of day, but a good target is 125. If your glucose is higher or lower than your target number, consult your physicians and follow his or her recommendations.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test your blood sugar at least four times a day.

  • It is important to use a variety of testing sites. Using a single site repeatedly can form calluses, and make it hard to extract a sample.
