How to Remove C5 Door Panels

Save

"C5" is the General Motors code name for the fifth-generation of the Chevrolet Corvette. Production of the C5 Corvette began in 1997 and ended in 2004, with the introduction of the sixth-generation Corvette (dubbed C6). Because the C5 Corvette experienced few design changes between model years, removing the door panel will be the same for every year of the C5 Corvette.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • TORX bit or screwdriver (T-30)
  • Small towel
  • Lower the window completely, turn the engine off and disconnect the negative battery (-) cable.

  • Locate the small rectangular panel behind the interior door pull. Use a flat-head screwdriver or a pry tool to remove the panel.

  • Remove the two TORX screws from behind the panel. Use a T-30 TORX screwdriver to remove them.

  • Pull the interior door handle open and locate the small slots at the top and bottom of the plastic cover. Use the slots to pry off the panel.

  • Insert the flat-head screwdriver into the bottom part of the door courtesy-light lens. Wrap the tip of the screwdriver with a cloth to protect the panel from scratches. Push the screwdriver up to disengage the bottom clip and then remove the lens.

  • Grasp the door panel around the bottom (you can use the courtesy-light cavity for support) and pull the panel to disengage the clips. The panel is attached by six clips: two on each side, except for the top. Once you have one section disengaged, move to another.

  • Carefully pull the panel away from the door a few inches. Locate the electrical connection behind the door panel (power window and lock harness) and press the tab to disconnect the panel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep a small container handy to store the small pieces and screws you remove. If you lose them, reinstalling the door panel will be difficult. The removal procedure is the same for both door panels.
  • Make sure you disconnect the battery first. Working with electrical components with a connected battery will put you at risk of electrical shock.
