Things You'll Need:
- Japanese Lantern Plumeria cutting
- Utility knife or pruning shears
- Shovel
- Fertilizer
- Fungus control
-
Step 1
Make a cutting from an established Japanese Lantern Plumeria tree. Use a utility knife or pruning shears to cut a 6 to 7-inch piece of Plumeria stalk off of the growing tip of a branch. For best results, select a young branch that does not yet have foliage. Exercise caution, as the cut end will drip considerable amounts of white, sticky sap. Alternatively, obtain a cutting from a specialty nursery or garden store.
-
Step 2
Wait for the cut end of the Japanese Lantern cutting to dry out and stop dripping sap. Prepare the planting location while waiting. Select an area that is in direct sunlight and has well-drained soil. Break apart the soil with a shovel to a depth of 12 to 18 inches.
-
Step 3
Sink the cutting vertically into the ground, cut edge facing down, to a depth of 2 to 3 inches. Pack down the soil around the cutting. Water thoroughly. Keep the soil moist until new growth sprouts from the tip of the Plumeria cutting, signifying the development of underground roots.
-
Step 4
Water the Japanese Lantern tree twice daily, as the plant thrives when well-watered. The single cutting will quickly develop leaves and branches.
-
Step 5
Fertilize the plant twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Use a standard tree fertilizer, obtained from a garden supply store or general retailer. Administer the fertilizer according to the product's guidelines, as application varies by manufacturer. For easiest administration, use a liquid fertilizer and apply during regular watering.
