Outdoor weddings require planning for the unexpected, which may mean that you need to construct a temporary awning. The awning may act as a cover for the food, as a wedding ceremony tent for smaller weddings, or as protection from the sun. Other times, a wedding awning is used as a means to create ambience outside. While you can rent or buy party tents, it is also possible to build your own awning.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 12-by-12 white tarp with grommets
  • 6 10-foot tent poles
  • White rope
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Ladder
  • Assistant
  • White tulle (optional)
  • White string lights (optional)
  • Plugs (optional)
  1. Step 1

Lay out the tarp and tent poles. Take the tent poles and white tarp to the area where you want the awning to stand. Lay the tarp out flat and place one tent pole on the ground at each corner and in the center on each side of the trap. Lay the poles on the ground so that the bottom of the pole (the part that drives into the ground) is facing away from the tarp and the top of the pole is facing near the tarp.

  2. Step 2

Attach the tarp to the poles. Lace the white rope through the grommets in each corner of the tarp. Using the piece of rope in one corner, tie the rope around the top end of a tent pole. Position the pole so that it will jut up against the tarp so that when you raise the tarp and stick the pole into the ground, the pole will hold the tarp up. Wrap the tarp around the tent pole and tie the rope in each corner to the top end of its respective tent pole.

  3. Step 3

Erect the awning. You may need at least one other person to stand on the ground while you climb on the ladder to erect the awning. Wrap the corners of each side of the tarp awning to a tent pole, looping the corners of the tarp around the pole. Have the person on the ground lift the top of the tent pole with the tarp attached. The person on the ladder should help straighten the tent pole in the air until you can drive the bottom of the tent pole into the dirt. One at a time, do this with each tent pole until the awning is erected. Make sure each corner is secure so that the tarp is taut and tight.

  4. Step 4

Decorate. Wrap white tulle and white string lights around the tent poles. Plug the lights in before the ceremony or reception begins. This helps cover the tent poles and add some decor to the awning.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place large rocks or boulders on each side of each tent pole to make it a little sturdier.
