How to Replace the Modem for a Compaq Presario 2100

The Compaq Presario 2100 laptop computer comes in two different versions. One has a normal 56kbps modem and the other uses a wireless card for accessing the Internet without any additional cables. Regardless of which version of the Presario 2100 laptop you have, the modem or wireless network card are located in the same position and are removed the same way. The modem is in easy reach, which means that the average computer user can easily replace it without having to take the computer to a service center.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the Compaq Presario 2100's power cable. Power off the laptop and close the LCD screen lid. Turn the unit over.

      Push the battery's release latch upward and pull the battery out of the laptop casing. Locate the two screws that hold the plastic door over the modem on the left side of the case. Remove the screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver.

      Lift the plastic door off of the Presario 2100 case and set it aside. Unplug the two antenna cables running from the top of the modem to the motherboard if your Presario 2100 has a wireless card.

      Press down the two latches located on either side of the wireless card. Lift the modem and remove it.

      Set the replacement card into the open port inside the case. Press down the two latches and reconnect the two antenna cables if you are using a wireless card. Set the plastic door back onto the case.

      Reconnect the battery. Power on the Presario 2100. Insert the installation disc that came with the new modem. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the modem's drivers.

Tips & Warnings

  • The motherboard and modem of your Compaq Presario 2100 can be severely damaged by static electricity. Before touching the modem or opening up the laptop's case you need to ground yourself by grabbing a metal object that is firmly connected to the floor.
