Things You'll Need:
- Deadbolt lock kit
- Tape
- Center punch tool or nail
- Bi-metal hole saw
-
Step 1
Secure the template that came with the deadbolt package to the metal door using tape. Be sure that the position of the template will not interfere with the hardware that already exists on the door. Keep in mind that the deadbolt should be placed six to twelve inches above or a minimum of six inches below the lockset.
-
Step 2
Punch a hole through the template where the largest circle is located. Use a center punch tool or a nail to make a shallow hole in the middle of the largest circle.
-
Step 3
Cut the lock hole by using a bi-metal hole saw. Cut the hole to the size outlined on the template. Keep the tool at a 90-degree angle when cutting to keep the cut smooth.
-
Step 4
Drill the latch hole at the edge of the door using a one inch bi-metal hole saw. This hole will be marked by the template as well. Drill pilot holes where the screw holes are shown on the template.
-
Step 5
Put the cylinder ring around the body of the lock then slide it into the front of the door. Be sure the keyhole is at the bottom of the lock. Put the cylinder and connecting bar into the cylinder opening from the outside. Turn the bolt to the open position and attach the back plate to the inside portion of the door.
-
Step 6
Line up the connecting bar with the hole in the bolt casing. Secure the bolt casing to the door from the inside.
-
Step 7
Work from the outside of the door to insert the cylinder into the cylinder hole. Check the manufacturer's instructions to properly align the latch bolt and cylinder, as deadbolts may be slightly different. Align the thumb latch with the cylinder and secure it to the inside of the door. Not all deadbolts have a thumb latch so this may not be applicable in all cases.
-
Step 8
Remove the template from the door and check the deadbolt for proper operation.
