A personal homepage is a way to share information on the Internet about yourself, your interests and your hobbies. You can pick from an array of websites that offer free homepages, or, to access more advanced features, you can pay a fee to create a page. A well-known site that has been around the Internet for a long time is Angelfire.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to www.angelfire.com. If you do not already have an account with Angelfire, you will need to sign up for one. Choose whether you would like to build a website for free or pay for one. For this example, we'll sign up for a free one.

  2. Step 2

Click the link that says "Sign Up for FREE Today." On the next page, enter a username, which is the name that shows up in your homepage address and the phrase that you or someone types in to view your page. For this example, we will create the username "lovinglivinglife" (this will make your homepage address lovinglivinglife.angelfire.com). Choose a password of more than six characters, and confirm your password in the next box.

  3. Step 3

Fill out account information requested. Choose whether you want to receive lessons and tips by leaving the marketing preferences box checked or unchecked. Last, verify your registration by entering the characters in the CAPTCHA, which is a technology used to distinguish automated spam bots from humans signing up for an account. Click the "Agree" button.

  4. Step 4

Check your email to activate your account. A link in the activation email takes you directly to Angelfire and asks you what you would like to do. Because you are building your own homepage, click the option next to "Build a website with Angelfire Webshell."

  5. Step 5

Locate the File Management area under the Webshell area, and choose "index.html." Click the "Edit" button underneath, next to "Files." This will take you to the page where you can change the look of your homepage. Designing the look of your homepage includes choosing what colors to use for your background and text, deciding whether you want to include links to other websites, and adding pictures if you choose to put them on your homepage.

  6. Step 6

Go down the list for each step, and fill out the fields according to your preferences, depending on what type of page you want to create for yourself. If you want to view the work you have done before you are completely finished with each area, click the "Preview" button, and your site will pop up in a new window or tab. Be sure to save your work periodically in case you encounter an error in your browser or your computer. After saving all of your work, try navigating to your site from a new browser window to see what it looks like to someone else viewing your site.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want to add more advanced HTML code to your page, you can find Internet resources by searching for "HTML code." HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language and is the code used to create the pictures and text you see on some websites. Most HTML tutorial websites will instruct you on how to use the code on your homepage.
  • Be careful of the information you post on your page. Never give out your home address because the Internet is accessible by anyone, and nothing is private.
