How to Choose the Size of a Wacom Pen Tablet

Photo retouchers, graphic designers, artists, architects, and many others use Wacom pen tablets. Choosing the right size for your needs can be tricky, however.

The most important things to take into consideration when choosing a Wacom pen tablet are cost, ergonomics, and intended use.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what your intended application is. Will you use the tablet for photo retouching? Illustration? Your usage of the tablet will determine the size you need.

    • 2

Choose the 4-inch by 5-inch tablet if you do mostly photo retouching, if you have a short stroke length when drawing, or if you want to be able to travel easily with the tablet. This size tablet is the best compromise between cost and ergonomics for small jobs or infrequent use.

    • 3

Choose the 6x8 tablet if you have a medium stroke length when drawing, have a dual monitor setup, or will use the tablet mostly for illustration work. This size tablet has better ergonomic comfort than the 4x5 without being bulky like the 9x12.

    • 4

Choose the 9x12 tablet if you have a dual-monitor setup and have a large stroke length or use your shoulders or elbows when drawing. This size tablet will give you more of a 1:1 ratio between the pen stroke and what is displayed on the screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before you purchase a pen tablet, shop around. Try borrowing a friend's tablet or trying several out at a store to see which one feels best and works best for you.
