How to Block a Call From Showing on Caller ID

When you place a phone call from your home or cellular phone, the phone number and sometimes your name will be displayed on the caller identification device (caller ID) of the person or business you dialed. To maintain your privacy, there are several ways to place a call and block your number from being displayed on the caller ID. Choosing the right method of blocking your call depends on how often you want to block your telephone number.

Instructions

    • 1

Block your land line or cellular number on a single-call basis. Dial *67 on your land line, and you will hear four short tones followed by the regular dial tone. Dial the phone number of the person you would like to call. When using a cellular phone, dial *67 and the number you wish to call and press "talk." The *67 function works only for a single phone call. When you end that phone call, the call block is no longer in effect. You must dial *67 before each phone call to block your number.

    • 2

Place the call through a third party. Call from a pay phone, use a pre-paid phone card, or dial 0 for the operator and have the operator place the call.

    • 3

Block your number on a permanent basis. Call your home phone or cellular phone service provider, and purchase a call-blocking service that will block your number for all outgoing calls.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some companies and homeowners can refuse to accept phone calls from blocked numbers. If you use a permanent call-blocking service, you will have to dial *82 to unblock your call to reach that number. If you do not want to display your number to someone who does not accept calls from blocked numbers, you can still place the call through a third party.
