How to Remove Unwanted Control Panels in XP

The control panel seems to grow with each new version of Windows. Windows XP is particularly known for having many options available in the control panel--many of which, some users simply do not need. Use Microsoft's free utility, TweakUI, to remove unwanted control panel icons.

Things You'll Need:

• Microsoft TweakUI

1. Download TweakUI from ComputerHope.com (see Resources).

2. Launch TweakUI. After the program loads, click on the link labeled "Control Panel."

3. Examine the list on the right side of the window for Control Panel icons that you do not need to see. The shortcut name and full program name will be shown for each control panel icon.

4. Remove the check mark from the box next to each Control Panel icon you would like to disable.

5. Click "OK." You may need to restart your computer to complete the change.

Tips & Warnings

• TweakUI is not the only solution for removing icons from the Windows XP control panel. It is also possible to do so by making edits in the Windows registry. However, this method is not recommended. The registry contains information that is required in order for the operating system to function properly, and it is too easy to make a mistake that will render the computer unstable. TweakUI makes the necessary registry changes for you.
