Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface of the stove for painting. Mix one quarter cup of tri-sodium phosphate with one gallon of warm water. Scrub the solution onto the wood stove using a wire brush. This will get rid of the old paint on the stove. Follow up with a steel wool pad rubbed over the wood stove. Sand spots on the stove where the paint is difficult to remove. Use white distilled vinegar to wipe away rust spots on the stove.

    • 2

Buy a can of spray paint in the color of your choice specifically designed for wood stoves. Shake the spray paint can well and test it on cardboard or newspaper prior to painting. Testing the paint will clear it through the tube in which it is drawn up through so that it sprays properly.

    • 3

Hold the spray can about 12 inches from the stove. Spraying too close will cause the paint to pool and run. Spraying from too far will give the stove an uneven coating.

    • 4

Spray the paint onto the stove, moving from left to right, until the entire surface is painted as desired. Avoid using a circular motion when spraying the paint. Also, do not hold down the nozzle continuously while painting the wood stove.

    • 5

Cure the paint on the wood stove by burning wood in it three times. The paint will be sticky while it is curing so avoid placing objects on the stove until it has completely cured.
