How to Feed Spiders to a Venus Flytrap

The scientific name for a Venus Flytrap is Dionaea muscipula. It's a carnivorous plant which means that it eats meat. You can feed your Venus Flytrap spiders, ants, flies, beetles and earwigs. It is important, however, that you do this without touching the Venus Flytrap. Otherwise, you will trick the Venus Flytrap in to closing up without any food in it. After time, this can kill the plant. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Keep an eye out for some spiders. Look in the corners of your home. You may also want to check for spiderwebs on your porch or in your room.

    • 2

Scoop the spider up in to a small container by using the lid to direct the spider in to the container. You want the spider to be alive when you feed it to your Venus Flytrap. The spider's movement will cross the hairs inside of the plant and trigger the plant to close up.

    • 3

Use a pair of tweezers to pick the spider up. Drop the spider down in to the Venus Flytrap. The Venus Flytrap will close up once the spider starts moving. If the spider looks like it will escape, use your tweezers to guide it back in.

Tips & Warnings

  • Feed your Venus Flytrap between one and three spiders per month. The plant will not need to eat any more often than that.

  • Never feed your Venus Flytrap table food. This could kill the plant.
