The Asian lady beetle, originally from Asia as the name implies, is a spotted beetle that's now common throughout North America. The beetles are beneficial in gardens because they like to feed on insect pests such as aphids. But too much of a good thing can be bad. Some regions may experience heavy Asian lady beetle populations if the pest populations increase, and the lady beetles can quickly invade nearby structures like your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Caulk
  • Permethrin-based insecticide
  • Residual insecticide spray
  • Food-grade diatomaceous earth
  1. Step 1

Inspect your house if you are experiencing an invading infestation of beetles in your home. Look for holes or gaps in the wall through which the Asian lady beetles can travel. Common problem areas include exterior pipes and the corners of window frames or door frames. Seal these holes with caulk to prevent the lady beetles from entering.

  2. Step 2

Use a permethrin-based insecticide. Permethrin is toxic for Asian lady beetles and also deters future beetles from entering the area. Spray the insecticide on any surface on which the beetles collect, such as window sills or outdoor furniture. Insecticides containing permethrin may be obtained at most nurseries or general retailers, and include products like Sara Lee's Ridsect Flying Insect Killer and Raid's House & Garden Insect Killer.

  3. Step 3

Spray the exterior of your house, barn, shed and other outdoor structures with a residual insecticide like Coopex Residual Insecticide or Demon WP. For best results, spray at the end of summer when the Asian lady beetles begin searching for hibernation spots for the coming winter. The residual product will kill the searching beetles, killing on contact and disrupting the natural life cycle of the Asian lady beetle.

  4. Step 4

Dust problem areas with food-grade diatomaceous earth as an alternative to insecticide spray. This option is best for individuals who do not want to use toxic insecticidal products. The natural powder slices through the Asian lady beetle's shell and kills it. Dust the powder in common entrance areas, such as window sills.

Tips & Warnings
  • Permethrin is water-soluble and highly toxic to fish and other aquatic lifeforms.
