How to Size Table Linens
When you are considering what size table linens to buy for your home, you must determine the size of the tables you want to cover. Properly sized table linens should include extra material on each edge so the tablecloth hangs over the edge of the table. Once you know the size you need, consider which color will go best with your dining room. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Determine the size and shape of your table. For rectangular tables, measure the length and width. For square tables, the length and the width are the same distance. For round tables, measure the diameter, which is the distance across the table. For oval tables, measure the distance across lengthwise and width-wise, also known as using the long diameter and the short diameter.

Determine the number of place settings your table can comfortably fit if you are unable to measure the size of your table.

3
Use a sizing chart to determine the proper linen size for your table, which is available online. (See Resources.) For example, a 35x35-inch square table needs a linen size of 52x52 inches. Or if you are using place seatings, a rectangular table that seats five needs a 52x70-inch table linen.

Tips & Warnings
If you have a non-traditional shaped table, measure the length and width of the table and add 16 inches to each measurement so you have enough extra for the overhang on each end of the table. For example, if your table is 20x50 inches, you need a table linen that measures at least 36x66 inches.
