How to Roast Black Walnuts

People are more heath conscious these days and are looking for better, healthier ways to snack. One way is roasting black walnuts. Black walnuts are considered a good source of protein and are low in cholesterol. Eating nuts as part of a healthy diet is good for maintaining weight loss. Roasting them brings out the flavor and the oil of the nuts, enabling you to add them to salads, desserts and many other types of food. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Black walnuts
  • Knife or rolling pin
  • Plastic bag
  • Cookie sheet
  • Olive or vegetable oil

Instructions

    • 1

      Purchase a bag of black walnuts from your local supermarket. Make sure they are firm.

      Crack open the walnuts with the back of a knife or with a rolling pin inside of a plastic bag. Separate them from the shells and place them on a cookie sheet.

      Drizzle olive oil or vegetable oil over the exposed black walnut meat on the cookie sheet.

      Put the cookie sheet into the oven and bake for several minutes at 350 degrees. When the skin starts peeling off, take them out of the oven.

      You can add roasted black walnuts to nearly any baked good, from cakes to cookies.

    There is no way in hades you can crack a black walnut shell with a knife or a rolling pin without doing major damage to those implements and/or yourself. The walnut will escape unscathed. You need a hammer and a hard sturdy surface, or a piece of professional cracking equipment.
