Instructions

    • 1

Draw out your design onto the sketch paper or transparency paper with the black marker. Some art projectors can project using regular paper, while overhead projectors need transparency paper. If you don't want to draw the design, use photographs, pre-made designs or a picture of your favorite work of art.

    • 2

Set the projector in front of the wall you wish to paint on and place the image in the appropriate spot on the projector. When the projector is turned on, the image will appear on the wall.

    • 3

Move the projector forward to make the image smaller, or backward to make the image larger, until it appears at the desired size. Adjust the sharpness of the image with the appropriate knob on the projector. Refer to the projector manual if necessary.

    • 4

Trace the outlines of the projected image onto the wall using a pencil. Make light pencil strokes that can be easily erased or covered by paint. Turn the projector off when finished.

    • 5

Paint inside the lines of the penciled wall design using a paintbrush or roller. For more complicated designs, use a smaller brush or purchase a package of various-sized art brushes. It is important to fill in any background in the design first before proceeding with details.

    • 6

Let the paint dry for at least three hours.

    • 7

Go back in with a small art paintbrush and fill in any details such as shadows and highlights, texture or complex line work. Let dry.

    • 8

Apply a layer of varnish over the finished design using a paintbrush. This step is not necessary for simple designs like stripes, graphic images or polka dots. However, a varnish may be used for complex wall murals such as landscapes and portraits. Use a matte varnish for a flat finish and a glossy varnish for a shiny finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use painter's masking tape to outline graphic images such as stripes and polka dots. Paint inside the masking tape, then peel the tape off once the paint is dry to have perfectly defined edges. Taping off an area will protect it from being accidentally painted. Try taping a square on the desired wall, then creating your design within the boundaries.

  • Make sure to use a coordinating varnish for your paint type. For example, an oil-based varnish should be used for oil paints and a water-based varnish should be used for acrylics.
