Instructions

    • 1

Pick the area in your garden where you will house your twig trellis. Clear out all weeds, twigs and other debris in the area that could take over your trellis. Rake over the ground to level out and smooth down the surface.

    • 2

Collect twigs from your backyard landscape, which are simple to use and free when found in your environment. Young shoots and saplings are extremely pliable.

    • 3

Measure the space where your trellis will stand to ensure you have the correct dimensions to your trellis. Draw up a "blueprint" to refer to as you begin the building process. Keep in mind the plants and flowers you'll grow up the structure to help you decide the exact height and width.

    • 4

Attach the trellis material using galvanized wire and small nails. This will ensure they are secure and snug. Wet the twigs in advance to allow them to bend into a tight-fitting spot on the twig trellis.

    • 5

Dig a hole large enough to allow for at least one foot on the bottom of the twig trellis to use for securing into the soil. Insert the "feet" of the twig trellis into the hole and fill up the sides with soil. Press firmly to secure the feet into the ground. Alternatively, you can attach the twig trellis along a garden wall.

    • 6

Plant creeping vines and flowers in the ground around your twig trellis. Creeping phlox and thyme will add a lush and exotic look to your trellis. Water your new plants every two to four days until they become established into the ground.

Tips & Warnings

  • Trim the tops of the trellis using pruning shears for a clean finish. Clear out any debris that has collected during the project so the garden area is tidy and clean.

  • Always wear protective gloves when using pruning shears.
