How to Cook Hamburgers on an Infrared Grill

An infrared grill cooks at higher temperatures than those reached by a gas or charcoal grill. Expect shorter cooking times with all recipes prepared on an infrared grill. Before grilling, enhance the heat transfer from the grill to your burgers with a light coating of canola oil. Preheating the grill might add a few minutes, but this step will ensure your burgers get cooked all the way through with the perfect sear on the outside. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Salt and pepper (optional)
  • Canola oil in a spray bottle or canola oil cooking spray

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the infrared grill to the "Preheat" or "Clean" setting, if available. Let the grill preheat for five minutes before reducing the setting to "Grill" for at least five minutes before cooking. Use the high setting for grills without a "Preheat" or "Grill" setting.

    • 2

Shape three to four evenly sized hamburger patties from the meat with your hands. Use light pressure to retain juiciness in the finished product. Press your finger into the center of each patty to create a small indentation. Check that your patties measure no more than one-half of an inch thick or weigh more than eight ounces (1/2 of a pound).

    • 3

Place the burgers onto the preheated grill over direct heat and cook for three minutes and 30 seconds to create a sear and begin cooking the meat. Sprinkle salt and pepper over the meat as it cooks, if desired. See tips for more seasoning ideas.

    • 4

Flip the burgers with the spatula and sear for three minutes on the opposite side.

    • 5

Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest portion of the hamburger. Remove the burgers from the grill to a serving platter when the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees.

    • 6

Turn the grill off when finished cooking. Serve the hamburgers hot with buns and fixings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sprinkle garlic salt, hamburger seasoning or hickory salt over your hamburgers instead of plain salt and pepper for more flavor.
